Protecting and helping children and families

Gov. Gregoire is a mother and former tough-on-crime attorney general, so she understands what it takes to protect and help our children and families.

Before Gov. Gregoire was elected, overcrowded prisons released criminals early, and her Republican opponent wanted to slash healthcare for 46,000 kids. Voter-approved initiatives to reduce class sizes and increase teacher’s salaries were ignored.

Crime today is at a 14-year low. Sex offenders face increased jail sentences, and we’ve opened a new prison to keep criminals where they belong. We have the toughest toxic toy law in the nation. Voter-approved initiatives for education are fully funded and 84,000 more kids have healthcare.

Strengthening our economy

Gov. Gregoire was raised by a single, working mother in Auburn and understands the importance of a paycheck to working families. She is determined to continue strengthening our economy so working families can prosper.

When she took office, Washington had a $2.2 billion deficit and one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation.

Since then, we’ve created a big surplus and cut red tape. She led efforts to create more than 200,000 new jobs and complete 130 transportation projects. In tearing down the Cascade Curtain, Gov. Gregoire helped secure the first new water rights for farmers and eastern Washington communities in 30 years, and doubled state exports to $66 billion.

Under her leadership, Washington is leading the nation’s fight to reduce greenhouse emissions while cleaning up the Puget Sound. She put the state on track to create 25,000 green collar jobs by 2020 and remain a leader in the production of renewable energy.
