Transportation
Friends-
For too long, our highways and ferries were neglected even though a safe, reliable transportation system is vital for a healthy economy and a high quality of life.
As Governor, I believe we must continue to take on the challenge of improving our transportation system and get results that increase safety, reduce congestion and maintain our existing infrastructure.
Sincerely,
Chris
Gov. Chris Gregoire inherited a neglected transportation system that had not grown with Washington’s population. In 2003 and 2004, only 12 highway projects were completed.
Just three years later, we have completed 130 highway projects – from widening I-405 to a new SR-17 interchange in Moses Lake.
Gov. Gregoire is getting results that make our highways safer. She has strengthened 180 bridges against earthquakes. Gov. Gregoire is also improving safety on US 2 between Gold Bar and Monroe and other highways across the state.
All over the state, Gov. Gregoire is also getting results that reduce congestion. Commuters in Central Puget Sound benefit from 100 additional miles of HOV lanes and the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Further congestion relief is on the way with projects like the Hood Canal Bridge, the I-395 North Spokane Corridor and other projects all over the state.
Gov. Gregoire has also made tough decisions and cut through red tape to move big projects forward, like:
• Replacing the 520 Bridge – four years ahead of schedule and $500 million to $700 million cheaper than originally proposed
• Building and designing a new fleet of ferries – a historic event for our state
