Gov. Gregoire praises service of veterans past and present
TACOMA – Gov. Chris Gregoire and First Mike joined with veterans to honor the service and sacrifices of members of our Armed Forces as we near Memorial Day.
“As we gather this Memorial Day let us always remember those who sacrificed so we can live in freedom,” said Gov. Gregoire. “Veterans experience a lot of challenges, whether they’ve been retired for years or are just leaving active duty. It’s critical that we help them when they get home.” |

As governor of Washington, the people I meet often humble me, especially the incredible veterans among us.
Veterans are very close to my heart, particularly the one I married. I'm blessed with a wonderful husband, Mike Gregoire. "First Mike" (he didn't like "First Gentlemen"), is a tireless advocate for our veterans.
As a Vietnam combat veteran, Mike understands veterans' issues and has first-hand knowledge of what it's like to serve in our military. As governor, I'm in a position to advocate for and ultimately sign legislation that benefits veterans. We are doing great things for veterans at the state level and working to meet the growing needs of veterans in our state. |

The competitiveness of this year’s presidential election has brought the candidates to more of our communities than any other election in recent years. I believe our democracy is stronger when voters are given an opportunity to learn more about the candidates.
Senator John McCain lands in Washington state today to host a $33,100/plate event at a hotel in Bellevue. Most of us would use $33,100 to pay for our child’s college education or a down payment on a home.
When Senator McCain’s plane lands at Boeing Field, I hope he takes a moment to notice that he is surrounded by the world’s finest workers and airplanes. Continue reading at Daily Kos here...
One Washington Tour - Final Day
Posted May 10, 2008, 5:52 p.m.
The final day of a most successful One Washington tour! We woke up in Spokane early and ready to take on the day. Our first stop was in Sprague, where we met with Adams County Democratic Chair Terry Janzen, Lincoln County PCO Dean Ruud and other supporters.
Our next stop was in Pullman for canvassing and a meeting with the Whitman County Democrats. Both were a huge success and involved local community leaders as well as students from Washington State University.
As we have swept across Central and Eastern Washington, we have connected with a wide range of people, from students, to local Democratic leaders to owners of small businesses. Their enthusiasm for the governor’s race has been a constant reminder of the important choice we all face in November.
We had a warm welcome in Dayton from Columbia County Chair Cathy Lee Haight and Jock and Jim, two other Columbia County Democrats, and an engaging, successful community meeting.
Our last stop of the tour was in Walla Walla to meet with Chair Bill McCaw of the County Democrats, Serita McCaw, and a representative of the Whitman College Democrats. We doorbelled and met many positive members of the community who are ready to show their visible support for Gov. Chris Gregoire and her strong record. The entire stop was another reminder that Eastern Washington Democrats are ready to turnout in August and again in November.
What a tour! After four days and 17 counties, we are sad that the tour has come to an end, but are ecstatic about the fact that Central and Eastern Washington are showing such enthusiasm for Gov. Gregoire. The stories and experiences of the people we met have brought increased positive momentum to Team Gregoire.
One Washington Tour - Day 3
Posted May 9, 2008, 7:29 p.m.
The sun rose and day three began in Ellensburg. We were immediately on the road for Wenatchee to meet with Pat Notter, former chair of the Chelan County Democrats, Connie Swett, vice chair of Chelan County Democrats, and Lana Salvino, chair of the Douglas County Democrats.
Their high level of organization stood out to us, and is a testament to the fact that there is a growing presence of Democrats in Eastern Washington. They even told us that 12-15 young Democrats from a local high school come in to volunteer on a regular basis.

Okanogan was our next stop. Although we were not able to meet with the Democratic county chair, we dropped off Chris Gregoire lawn signs and other campaign materials for Okanogan County.
For some on this tour, it was their first time experiencing the beauty of Northeastern Washington. For others, it was a welcome treat to return to the serenity of the mountains and rivers of this treasured land.
After Okanogan, we headed to Ferry County to meet with activists and local leaders in Republic.
In Colville, we met with five Democrats, one of which was running for County Commissioner. We also learned that Stevens County has more Democratic elected county officials than Republicans. Activists were telling us that this is the way Central and Eastern Washington used to be and the Democrats are growing stronger every day.
After Colville, we headed to Pend Oreille County and met with the Democratic Executive Board members. They were excited that Governor Gregoire attended their annual BBQ one year ago, and were enthusiastic about meeting with us that evening. We ate a wonderful dinner and felt right at home.
Finally, we headed to Spokane where we met with Kay, who produces the yard signs you will see springing up around Central and Eastern Washington. She loves Governor Gregoire and understands that we need her leadership for another four years. She also told us how energetic young Democrats in Spokane hang out at her sign shop.
We loaded up the final boxes and were on our way to meet with Spokane County Chair Kristine Reeves. She shared the same enthusiasm that we saw with the county chairs we had met with previously.
We need to work hard to make sure Governor Gregoire gets re-elected, so that we can enjoy four more years of getting results.
Tomorrow, we head for Sprague to meet with supporters in Lincoln and Adams counties. Then we head south to a meeting and canvass in Pullman. Then we’re off to a meeting with county Democrats in Dayton and then to Walla Walla for canvassing beginning at Whitman College.
After every meeting on day three, we came away with new ideas, better ways to engage and energize local volunteers, and unique ways to best capitalize on the momentum of this important election year.
One Washington Tour - Day 2
Posted May 8, 2008, 8:22 p.m.
The second day of our tour began in the Tri-Cities. We ate a great breakfast with our gracious host Josie and met other excited supporters and had them sign our “Team Gregoire” banner.
After the delicious meal, we drove to Richland to meet with Bob Parizan, chair of the Benton County Democrats. Then, with other supporters, we toured the Democrats’ HQ. Parizan was confident that there was going to be a strong showing from Democrats this summer and fall in South Central Washington.
We met with Julie Larsen, the Klickitat County chair, and local enthusiast Ruth in Goldendale. County Chair Paul George was in Yakima to meet with us, and we also met Grant County Chair Ellie Webb in Moses Lake, who had gathered other enthusiastic Democratic activists and local leaders.
They all had the same resounding message: Democrats are ready to turnout in August and November. They are gaining momentum and want to ensure that the next four years in our state are as productive as the past four have been under the leadership of Governor Gregoire.
The evening ended in Ellensburg with the Kittitas County Democrats. They praised the campaign’s message of One Washington. Next was the president of the Central Washington University Young Democrats, who reported that the younger generation is pumped about this crucial election.
Then we took to the streets of Ellensburg to speak with voters. While the weather was a little cold, we still encountered the same support that we had received all day. Local citizens even offered gloves to help us fight the cold. The resounding support and enthusiasm was a nice way to end day two of our tour.
So far we’ve handed out 400 yard signs, and a ton of bumper stickers and window statics.
Tomorrow, we start off the day in Wenatchee with a meeting at the Chelan/ Douglas county Democrats’ headquarters. We’re looking forward to hearing more wonderful stories of how Governor Gregoire is addressing crucial issues in communities across the state and how local activists are to beginning to work on the campaign.
One Washington Tour - Day 1
Posted May 7, 2008, 6:59 p.m.
After leaving Seattle and heading east to the Tri-Cities, the ‘One Washington Tour’ for Gov. Chris Gregoire was underway. We will hit 17 counties over the next three days and spread the word that our campaign is ready to work with local activists to re-elect Governor Gregoire.
At our first stop in the Tri-Cities, we were greeted by Josie W. and her cousin Rebecca at a local Thai restaurant.
Earlier in the day, Craig, a union member and Vietnam veteran from Spokane, ate at the same restaurant on his way to deliver the first 700 Gregoire yard signs to various locations across Washington state. After loading our car to maximum capacity, we headed to Josie’s home for the night and met her husband Nick.
We’re looking forward to the events and activities that we know are about to unfold on the One Washington Tour. We’re enthusiastic about meeting local activists across the state and hearing their thoughts and ideas for this November.

The room was packed with nearly 1,300 energetic Gregoire supporters and raised more than $300,000.

Gov. Richardson was introduced by Julian Barrington, a 15-year-old from Franklin High School.
Julian exemplifies how getting results that improve education and communities makes a difference. He is the president of his high school freshman class, winner of the Young Black Achievers Youth Writers Contest and deliverer of the closing speech at the National Young Leaders State Conference.
Gov. Chris Gregoire and Gov. Bill Richardson delivered speeches about taking on challenges and fighting the Bush Administration to clean up our environment and provide healthcare to more children.
